New Labor and Employment Database on HeinOnline

W&L Law Library is pleased to announce access to Labor and Employment: The American Worker on HeinOnline.

Launched in February 2023, this comprehensive database is dedicated to all the ways America works: the history of organized labor in the United States, its influence on labor law, and the many ways people work for a living

It contains thousands of books, documents, and articles about the American workplace, from the labor rights movement in the 19th century to the struggles of today. Topics include the establishment of a minimum wage and the 40-hour workweek, collective bargaining, contracts, workplace hazards and safeguards, as well as efforts to make the workplace equitable for all. New scholarly articles and content are added each month.

Labor and Employment: The American Worker and other HeinOnline content is accessible to all current W&L students, faculty, and staff, as well as all University alumni through the Friends of the Library program.

New York Times Cooking Now Available at W&L

Just in time for holiday food and festivities, the W&L University Library and Law Library are pleased to announce complimentary access to New York Times Cooking.

Accessible at cooking.nytimes.com, New York Times Cooking is a leading online kitchen resource that helps home cooks of every level discover, save, and organize both classic and innovative recipes and learn to become better cooks.

To access NYT Cooking, you must have a current NYT individual digital subscription, which is also free for current W&L students, staff, and faculty. To sign up, follow the instructions in this secure document on Box (valid W&L credentials required).

Study Aids: A Guide to the Basics

Has everyone been mentioning hornbooks, commercial outlines, and other such supplemental readings that you have not touched? Do you have no idea what everyone else is talking about?

Here’s a quick and simple guide to some of the basics on study aids and supplements for law courses:

    1. Keep in mind that supplements are meant to add to your understanding. If you don’t have time for them or haven’t touched one until the week before finals, that is okay!
    2. Think of hornbooks and nutshells as summaries of a topic, and commercial outlines as an organized discussion of the ideas and case law of a topic.
    3. Some popular study aid types and titles:
    4. If you prefer audio study aids:
      • Law School Legends. Recordings by expert professors breaking down the class—very useful for learning how to format your outline or exam answers.
      • Sum and Substance. On a wide range of course topics.

Ready for more applicable practice? A selection of past exams from W&L Law professors are available on Box.

Many of the supplements above are available in the Reserve Room (Level 3 near the Circulation Desk) or online through West Academic Study Aids. You can also download some audiobook titles to your computer/device and access streaming audio recordings through the West Academic Audio app.

W&L Law students: Share your ideas for the Law Library with the SLACers!

The W&L Law Library Student Library Advisory Committee (SLACers) is composed of students from each class-year at the Law School. The group provides valuable input to the Library, serving as a sounding board for services, policies, programming, equipment, collection items, databases, and more.

SLACers are also informal ambassadors of the Library, promoting awareness of Library services and programs among the student body. SLACers also have their ears open for feedback about the Library from fellow students, and are encouraged to share ideas, thoughts, and concerns with the Library anytime.

To contact the SLACers, you may email SLACers@wlu.edu. Your message will be received by all current group members and the Law Library administration. Suggestions, feedback, and inquiries about the Law Library are welcome.

New at W&L Law: Quimbee Study Aids

Happy fall semester 2022!

W&L Law Library is excited for the new year to begin, and also to announce complimentary access to Quimbee Study Aids for students at W&L Law.

On August 26, all enrolled students were sent an email with instructions on how to activate a Quimbee account under the new W&L Law group.

Quimbee includes hundreds of video lessons covering dozens of law school courses, transcripts of these lessons, and thousands of practice questions with explanations to supplement other study methods.

Content is available through Quimbee.com or through the Quimbee iPhone, iPad, and Android apps.

HeinOnline Now Available for W&L Alumni

W&L Law Library is pleased to announce a new subscription to HeinOnline for all Washington and Lee University alumni. Graduates of the Law School, as well as W&L’s undergraduate schools, are eligible for access at no cost.

The special subscription includes full access to HeinOnline’s Law Journal Library, a collection of over 3,000 fully searchable scholarly and professional journals, browsable or downloadable in PDF and dating back to their first issue ever published. The one-of-a-kind database spans more than 42 million pages and 40 disciplines.

Access to the journals is complemented by Fastcase, a leading next-generation legal research service with tools to make case law research faster than ever: Case citations within articles are highlighted and hyperlinked to the judicial opinion in Fastcase. Users can also look up a case directly in Fastcase with HeinOnline’s citation tools.

HeinOnline is the latest of several online research databases that the W&L University Library and Law Library offer for alumni, including JSTOR and Project MUSE. All are accessible through the the Colonnade Connections / Friends of the Library webpage. To create a Colonnade Connections account, register online or contact the W&L Office of Alumni Engagement.

New Washington and Lee Law Journal Rankings Now Online

W&L Law Journal Rankings

The 2021 Washington and Lee Law Journal Rankings are now available at go.wlu.edu/lawjournals.

Maintained by the W&L Law Library, the Rankings are a world-recognized resource for identifying and comparing law journals by subject, country of publication, or rank across several categories relevant to scholars and publishers.

Data for 2021 includes the top 400 U.S.-published law journals and the top 100 law journals published outside the United States, based on citation counts and publication statistics for a 2017-2021 survey period.

New Rankings are released annually based on data up through the preceding calendar year. Historical data from the 1996-2003 to 2016-2020 survey periods remains accessible on the site for reference and comparison.

Summer/Post-Graduation Access to Research Platforms & Databases, 2022

Congrats to all W&L Law students on wrapping up the school year, and especially to our 3Ls on their momentous achievement of completing law school!

Westlaw, Lexis, and Bloomberg Law provide access of varying duration and scope during the summer to current law students and after graduation for alumni. Other online resources provided by the W&L Law Library also remain available.

Reminder: Always check with your supervisor before using your academic database accounts on work projects this summer. Although it may be permissible by the vendor’s rules, your employer may prefer that you use other resources.

  • Bloomberg Law
    Law students enjoy full and uninterrupted use of their BLaw accounts during the summer, without restrictions from Bloomberg. Account and log-in required. Graduating students automatically retain full access to their academic Bloomberg Law account for up to 6 months after graduation.
  • LexisNexis
    Law students enjoy full and uninterrupted use of their Lexis accounts during the summer, without restrictions from Lexis. Account and log-in required. Graduating students automatically retain full access to their academic Lexis account for up to 6 months after graduation. Graduates going into non-profit work may apply for LexisNexis ASPIRE access which lasts 12 months beyond graduation; details at http://lexisnexis.com/grad-access.
  • Westlaw
    Law students continue to have full access to their Westlaw accounts during the summer, however use is permitted only for non-profit purposes such as summer classes, law school research assistant/journal/clinic work, or unpaid public interest work. Account and log-in required. Graduating students may retain full access to their academic Westlaw account for up to 18 months after graduation (up to 60 hours of use per month) through the Grad Elite Practice Ready program; register at https://lawschool.thomsonreuters.com/grad-elite-status.
  • Other Databases via W&L Law Library
    The range of additional databases available to W&L students for legal research can be found on the Law Library’s Databases and Online Resources page. Frequently used resources include HeinOnline, ProQuest, Law360, and Law.com. W&L log-in and password are required off campus.
  • Graduate/Alumni Access to Online Resources
    W&L Law students graduating in May will lose remote access to all library subscription resources in early August, when their University computing accounts take on “alumni” status. However, all alums may access a selection of research databases through the University Library, including EBSCO Academic Search Complete, EBSCO Business Source Complete, JSTOR, and Project Muse (see https://library.wlu.edu/services/#alum). W&L Law Library is pleased to announce access to Westlaw Edge UK, a full-featured Thomson Reuters platform for legal materials and information in the United Kingdom.

Content includes UK case law, dockets, and law reports; statutes and legislation, newspapers, secondary materials, and many treatises through Westlaw UK Books. Tools and enhancements include Case Analytics, Legislation Compare, UK-EU Divergence Tracker, and Legislation Alerts.
